What to know about booking holiday travel this year

2 min read

Planning a getaway for the upcoming holiday season is shaping up to be a costly endeavor as airfares hit ten year highs. Driven by stubbornly high jet fuel prices and a tighter market, travelers are seeing significant jumps in costs for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Domestic round trips for Thanksgiving have climbed about 31 percent compared to last year, while Christmas flights follow closely behind with a 23 percent increase. The situation is further complicated by the absence of Spirit Airlines, whose closure in May removed a key budget competitor that typically forced larger carriers to keep their pricing in check.

While domestic hubs are becoming pricier, those looking toward international borders may find surprising opportunities. Fares to Mexico and Europe remain elevated, but routes to Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East are holding steady or even dipping slightly below previous levels. Some industry experts suggest that since many budget conscious families are choosing only one big trip this year rather than two, it might actually be more cost effective to book an adventurous flight to Paris than a standard domestic hop to another U.S. city.

To avoid the worst of these price hikes, timing is everything. Travel experts recommend locking in plans before Halloween to secure the best rates. For those flying domestically during Thanksgiving, skipping the traditional Wednesday departure can save substantial amounts of money; flying on Monday or even on Thanksgiving Day itself often results in lower fares. Similarly, avoiding the return rush on the Sunday following Thanksgiving could save passengers up to 250 dollars if they can push their return trip back to Monday or Tuesday.

Savvy travelers are also encouraged to rethink how they purchase their tickets. Instead of sticking to a standard round trip, using hacker fares by booking two separate one way tickets on different airlines can lead to savings for destinations like Miami, Denver, and Tokyo. Additionally, flying out of larger hub cities generally offers more competitive pricing and better recovery options if delays occur. To mitigate risk in such an expensive year, professionals advise utilizing accumulated loyalty points and investing in flexible travel insurance to protect against unexpected changes or sudden price drops_
